Visiting Lakes scored in the game’s first 20 seconds, and was never headed in posting a 3-2 victory over Antioch in a key North Suburban Conference Prairie Division boys soccer match on Thursday.
Lakes is 3-0 in the division and every other team in the seven-team loop now has at least one loss.
Tom Langbein headed home a pass from Jonathan Stanley in the opening seconds of the contest, and Stanley then converted on a pass from Langbein in the 27th minute for a 2-0 lead.
Antioch got one back two minutes later when freshman Iven Hernandez took the ball away in the box and banged home a shot off Lakes keeper Roberto Tre Re.
In the second half, Lakes regained the two-goal edge when Stanley scored from Lucas Istvanek in the 58th minute.
In the 60th minute, Lakes’ Bojan Zgonjanin was sent off for dissent, and two minutes later, Antioch capitalized on being a man up as William Mohr scored from Hernandez with a shot that caromed in off the post.
In the remaining 18 minutes, Antioch had one good chance, while Lakes had much the better of the play. For the game, shots were on frame were 17-6 in favor of the Eagles.
“It would have been nice (to get more goals), especially as tense as this game became,” said Lakes coach Kevin Kullby. “As it turned out, that third goal was enough.
“Antioch never gave up. They played us real tough. They’re a team we could face again in the regionals.”
The coach said it was a struggle playing a man down for the final 20 minutes.
“We had a player red-carded for language, and that took away some of our momentum.”
On the other side of the pitch, Antioch coach Marni Polakow was disappointed that her team didn’t finish strong.
“In the first half, we played well. We got a gift with the red card in the last 20 minutes, but we just couldn’t put it away. We got out-possessed the entire final 40 minutes,” she said. “We didn’t win any 50-50 balls in the air.”
Lakes’ Stanley was particularly adept at winning balls in the air.
Lakes (5-5-1 overall) plays North Chicago on Tuesday. Antioch (5-3-2 overall) had its five-game winning streak snapped and plays Grayslake North on Friday.
