Lakes High School junior Kecia Morway may debut for two soccer programs in 2010.
Two weeks ago, Morway gave her verbal commitment to Notre Dame, where she will enroll in the fall of that year. The left-sided defender chose the South Bend school over Northwestern and Clemson. This past fall, the Fighting Irish lost to North Carolina in the NCAA College Cup Final (the national championship game).
Head coach Randy Waldrum has told Morway he expects her to vie for playing time on the team's backline.
"I play left back on my club team and that is pretty much the position (Waldrum) told me I'm coming into," she said. "They have a left back graduating and he said I remind him of her, and he hopes I can step in and fill her shoes well."
Morway, who plays for the esteemed Eclipse Select club out of Libertyville, has never suited up for her high school team. However, she said that could change in the spring of 2010, when her sister Kara Morway is a freshman at Lakes.
"She's in eighth grade and plays for Eclipse," Kecia said. "But if she plays high school ... We'll wait and see if this (club season) goes the way I want it to. Then, I could play (high school) my senior year and we would play together. I would consider that."
Another bit of news from the Morway family pertains to older sister Kelsey Morway, an all-stater in 2006 for Antioch High School who is the school's all-time goals leader (72). Injuries initially prevented her from playing college soccer. However, Kecia reports Kelsey, now a junior at Northern Illinois, is hoping to join the Huskies squad next fall.
