It’s always nice to get a wakeup call and not have to pay for it with a loss.
That’s what happened to unbeaten Vernon Hills High’s football team on Friday.
The Cougars were stunned early and trailed unheralded Lakes 10-0 at halftime of their North Suburban Conference Prairie Division matchup in Lake Villa.
But in the second half, the Cougars scored on their first five possessions and rolled to a 39-17 victory.
Vernon Hills scored 26 third-quarter points.
Seb Evans tallied on a run, quarterback P.J. Marcek hooked up with DaVaris Daniels on a pair of TD passes, and Marcek ran in for a TD from 21 yards out.
Suddenly, it was 26-10 and over.
The Cougars tacked on a pair of fourth-quarter scores, both by Ernie Choi on short plunges.
Lakes took a 10-0 lead into intermission on a one-yard TD run by Justin Hotle early in the second quarter and a 27-yard field goal by David Tomis late in the period.
