Hawks handle Lancers, remain undefeated

ROSELLE -- Josh Hasenberg and Bartlett devoted a lot of time to the pass this week at practice and it showed Friday against Lake Park.

Hasenberg completed 23 of 31 passes for 188 yards -- 151 in the first half -- in a 30-7 win at Lake Park's homecoming game.

The senior quarterback ran in Bartlett's first touchdown from the 1-yard line and threw a 32-yard touchdown strike with 7.5 seconds remaining in the first half.

"We had some passing plays that worked and some that didn't," said Bartlett coach Tom Meaney, whose team improved to 4-0 and 2-0 in the Upstate Eight Conference.

"Josh did a good job throwing and our receivers did a good job catching the ball. We made the catches when we needed to and that's the main thing."

Alex VanNess and Cory Brown were Hasenberg's main targets, combining for 149 yards on 14 catches for the seventh-ranked team in the Class 8A state poll.

Although Lake Park's air attack was equally as effective with Larry Nawrat compiling 202 yards through the air, Bartlett came up with big stops just when it needed them against the Lancers (1-3, 1-1).

With less than six minutes remaining in the first half and the score tied, Bartlett took advantage of a botched snap on a Lake Park punt. Running back Fabian Libreri ran it in from 8 yards out to put Bartlett up 14-7 with 3:25 left.

With the remaining time in the second half, the Hawks put the game out of reach.

Dan Karys kicked a 27-yard field goal and Hasenberg threw a 32-yard touchdown with 7.5 seconds left to make it 24-7.

"They're a good team," Meaney said. "It was a close game up until that little flurry. I thought our defense played outstanding. We just had big plays."
