Lake Forest downs Stevenson

While going up for a kill, Tori Lanzillotti takes a quick look over the net at her opponent’s blocking defense.
Against host Stevenson on Wednesday, the Lake Forest senior outside hitter liked what she saw.
That’s because the Patriots usually sent only one blocker to defender Lanzillotti and her teammate Jennifer Kreb — saving the two-blocker defense for Scouts’ senior star Mary Streidl.
That strategy hasn’t been working against Lake Forest for much of the season, as the Scouts improved their record to 22-3 with an impressive 25-15, 25-15 victory over Stevenson.
Lake Forest’s balanced attack helped the Scouts take command of the North Suburban Conference Lake Division with a 5-0 record, while the Patriots fell to 21-6, 4-1.
The University of Pittsburgh recruit Streidl finished with a team-high nine kills, but Lanzillotti also pounded down nine kills and Kreb contributed seven kills.
“It is pretty nice to see only one blocker across the net against me,” Lanzillotti said. “I know that I have a good shot of getting the ball down when I’m not being double-teamed.
“Teams try to concentrate on Mary so much, but we have other players who can also get the job done. This was a big win for us.”
A big part of the reason Lake Forest has a balanced attack is the setting of senior Heidi Sierks (30 assists on Tuesday).
“Heidi does a great job of getting everyone involved,” said Lake Forest coach Ray Werner. “She really dictates the tempo out there and gets our attack going.”
Lake Forest’s up-tempo style of play was too much for Stevenson.
“We weren’t ready for (Lake Forest’s) speed and their tempo,” said Stevenson coach Tim Crow. “They were the fastest team we’ve played this season. We got thumped by a very good team.”
