With the clock winding down, Craig Scott figured he had nothing to lose.

The Lake Forest Academy junior unleashed a 30-yard shot from the left side. The ball moved through traffic and nestled inside the far post to help the Caxys forge a 2-2 tie Tuesday against host Lake Forest.

“It was the last minutes of the game,” said Scott, who was assisted by Joey Laboy. “I thought, ‘I might as well take a shot.’”

The long shot caught Scouts goalkeeper Sam Audley by surprise.

“Sam read it as a cross,” said Scouts coach Rob Parry. “He saw two (LFA) guys going to the back post, so he laid off. But it was a great shot.”

Scott’s goal tied the game with only 2:03 left in the game. The Scouts (11-4-1) tried to answer, but a header by John Moderwell sailed wide in the final minute.

The late tally spoiled a big game by Lake Forest midfielder Riley Scholer. The senior scored both Scout goals to bump his season total to three.

In the 24th minute of action, Ian Forlow lofted a long pass to Scholer. He promptly slammed in the point-blank shot to give LF a 1-0 lead.

The Caxys responded less than six minutes later. Charlie Versen stole a ball deep in Scout territory and ripped a 20-yard bullet just under the crossbar.

“Both of our goals were excellent shots,” said Caxys coach Kevin Versen.

The second Scholer goal came after a corner kick by Kevin Grube. The ball caromed off No. 15 to give the Scouts a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute.

“Our kids were upset by that goal,” Coach Versen said. “We thought the ball went out of bounds and caromed off a wheel (which supports the net).”

As expected, the match was intense.

“It’s a good friendly rivalry,” said Coach Versen, aware the teams are 1-1-2 in four meetings.

A big moment occurred late in the first half when Caxy goalkeeper Joe Tarkington stopped a penalty kick.

LF Academy had plenty of chances to score more goals. In the second half, Shannon Seymour hit the crossbar and Manny Chavez hit the post (on a header).

Good week: Lake Forest will play for the North Suburban Conference title on Oct. 13. The Scouts will travel to Lakes for a 6:15 p.m. showdown, hoping to bring home the first NSC championship to Lake Forest since 1979.

In the first game of the 2011 campaign, the Scouts lost 2-1 to the Eagles.

The Scouts wrapped up the NSC Lake crown with victories over Libertyville and Lake Zurich last week.

First, the Scouts edged the state-ranked Wildcats 2-1 on Oct. 4. The LF goals belonged to James Ankenman (from Michael Shipp) and Forlow.

Lake Forest improved to 5-1 in division play by defeating Lake Zurich 2-0 on Oct. 6. The goals belonged to Ankenman and Moderwell (assisted by Tim Boyle). Audley made six saves to preserve the club’s seventh shutout of the season.
