Lakes, Carmel advance to semifinals

Lakes High’s boys soccer team opened its season on Tuesday with a stunning 2-1 victory over the home team in Lake Forest High’s North Shore Shootout tournament.
Jonathan Stanley scored in the first half and Trevor Ray’s tally with 10 minutes left was the game-winner as the Eagles advanced to Thursday’s semifinals in the eight-team, bracket-format event.
Lakes will face Highland Park in the semis, while Lake Forest will battle unheralded St. Patrick in a consolation game.
“It was nice to hold our own out there. We weathered the storm at the end of the game,” said Lake coach Kevin Kullby, whose team was under siege in the final 10 minutes as the Scouts pushed forward trying to get the equalizer.
“We need to continue to play to our abilities and make good on our chances.”
Stanley’s goal came off a set piece started by Scott Brugioni (free kick). The ball was then headed toward the net and Stanley cleaned up.
“It was nice to convert on a set piece,” said Kullby. “Teams will learn not to foul us in their own third.”
Lake Forest coach Rob Parry saw Karl Morcott score in the second half for the Scouts to tied it at 1-1, and then watched as his team had a half-dozen near-misses in the final minutes.
“We played from box to box very well, but the last 10 yards on each end cost us the game,” the coach said.
In another quarterfinal-round game, Carmel flattened reeling Waukegan 5-1.
The Corsairs led 3-1 at the break on goals by Christian Avalos, Max Heinrich, and Peter Kolb. Carmel plays Deerfield in the semifinals.
Waukegan’s goal was scored by Armando Rojas.
The Bulldogs have now surrendered 15 goals in two games.
In other action on Tuesday, Highland Park crushed St. Patrick’s of Chicago 9-0 and Deerfield beat Dundee-Crown 4-1.
Leading the Highland Park onslaught were Andrew Tran, Ricardo Rodriguez and Frankie Rios. They each had a pair of tallies.
