Lake Central offense looks sharp against Hobart

HOBART — Perhaps it was fitting that Lake Central and Hobart squared off in Friday night’s scrimmage, as Brett St. Germain can understand what Ryan Turley is going through.

Last year, St. Germain took on the formidable challenge of leading Lake Central, a school with big numbers but not a lot of success. The Indians went 2-7 in St. Germain’s first year.

Turley, meanwhile, is taking the reins this year at Hobart, his alma mater, feverishly working to return the program to the state-championship caliber of old.

So while the Indians scored six touchdowns to Hobart’s two Friday night at the Brickyard, the message from both camps was almost identical.

Both will try to establish the run early. When possible, they’ll also challenge the pass. And they’re both going to learn from the dress rehearsal for opening night, which is just a week away.

“It’s a great learning tool, we’re going to get some film out of it,” Turley said. “Football, play-by-play and learning to go hard, we’ve got to get a little bit tougher. The Xs and Os will come.”

Though the Brickies seemed to lean toward rushing (especially with senior Zac Randall, who scored from 10 yards out), it was the 55-yard pass from quarterback Sam Kosich to Max Wilson on the first series that showed hints of a possible aerial strategy. The Indians, also establishing both options, received sparks from two upperclassmen trying to make a name for themselves — junior quarterback David Yancey (who threw for two touchdowns, the longest 10 yards) and senior Chase Fieldhouse (who ran in two 10-yarders).

Yancey, a cornerback last season, was sidelined for most of that campaign with a separated shoulder. Fieldhouse mainly was used as a backup in 2010.

“It’s a different (offensive) line, it’s a totally different team this year,” Fieldhouse said.

“We want to change that (2-7 record), we’ve been working really hard,” Yancey said.

St. Germain points to attitude as the key.

“It’s stepping on the field Friday and expecting to win,” he said.

LC’s Drew Hollingsworth also ran in a pair of touchdowns.
