Dunbar rolls by King

After a lackluster first three quarters, Dunbar quarterback Darvell Harris decided to take matters into his own hands.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Harris – who is also the punter – called his own number on fourth and 12, running a fake punt for 30 yards and a first down. He followed that up with a 44-yard touchdown run, then came back with a 70-yard score that sealed a 28-6 Public League playoff win over King.

"No, I didn't call it. That was him," Mightymen (5-4) coach Glenn Johnson said of the fake punt. "I woulda killed him if he didn't make it."

Harris also threw for 96 yards, but it was his legs that made the difference. On his first score, he faked a handoff, then ran up the middle untouched for 44 yards. The 70-yarder came on a third-and-11 play, where he went to the outside and outran the entire Jaguars defense.

"We made it tough on ourselves," he said of Dunbar's slim 8-0 lead at the half. "Coach got on us and we stepped it up."

Devon Robinson led King (5-4) with 98 yards on 24 carries. Devonte Rimmer added six carries for 54 yards. The Jaguars were hindered by four turnovers (two fumbles and two interceptions) and 11 penalties for 105 yards.

Dunbar also got touchdown runs from Omar Collins (11 carries for 58 yards) and Antwan Jones (13 carries for 21 yards), who had the only score of the first half. Eszra Harris caught three passes for 80 yards and also had an interception late in the game.

"It shouldn't have been that close," Johnson said. "We just started stalling. Sometimes teenagers take things for granted."
