Mather repeats thanks to Murphy

Mather's Ken Murphy scored the game-winning basket with 12 seconds left, lifting the Rangers to a 60-59 victory over King Thursday night in the championship game of the Luther North Holiday Tournament.

The dramatic finish earned Mather (10-2) its second straight Luther North title.

"We were behind, but I knew I had to do something since I'm a senior," Murphy said. "I got the ball and if I passed the ball, I didn't think we would have enough time to score. My shot was one that Derrick Rose makes. I patterned it after him."

The Rangers squandered a 50-38 lead with four minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Darnell Fishback (15 points) pulled King to within 58-57 on a three-pointer with 50 seconds remaining. On the ensuing play, Mather turned the ball over and King's Justin Reynolds (19 points) was fouled with 24 seconds left. Reynolds calmly sank both free throws giving the Jaguars (9-4) a 59-58 lead.

"When we fell behind we were a little frustrated," Murphy said. "Coach [Glen Heffernan] was yelling at us, but that's what he is supposed to do."

Brandon Roby added 20 points, including five three-pointers, for Mather.

Jonathon Doss (17 points) and Gerardo Sandoval (12 points) led Taft to a 56-43 win over Jones in the third-place game at Luther North. The Eagles (7-6) never trailed the entire game. John Chico paced Jones (4-9) with 15 points.
