Kelvyn Park holds on to top MSA

Miguel Zepeda was waiting all week to face Perspectives-MSA Thursday afternoon. The 6-foot Kelvyn Park point guard was told by coach Kai Heinecken that he would be guarding the 6-10 Kentucky-bound Anthony Davis.

"Everyone was talking all this stuff saying he's the best," Zepeda said. "I want to play against the best."

Zepeda wouldn't get that chance as Davis sat out injured. But Kelvyn Park did pick up the win, defeating the visiting Wolves 57-54.

"I told my kids this is the kind of game you want to play," Heinecken said. "It was a fun game with a lot of action."

Kelvyn Park (3-9, 2-6) never trailed in the contest, but saw a nine-point lead get trimmed to just one when Jarred Elliot hit a three-pointer with 35 seconds left in the fourth quarter to make it a 55-54 game.

After a failed possession by Perspectives-MSA (4-15, 4-4), Zepeda was fouled with six seconds remaining. The point guard calmly sank two free throws to make it 57-54 and a three-point attempt by Tyre Davis at the buzzer was no good.

"I think one of keys was we were ready for them rolling the ball and we stopped that so they couldn't get the extra few seconds," Heinecken said. "They really stepped up today. Zepeda took over in the second half."

Zepeda finished with 13 points and Kevin Munoz added 12 more on four three-pointers. Juvon Turner led Perspectives-MSA with 17 points.

Davis was in street clothes on the sideline and was vocal from the bench during the game and timeouts. On Tuesday, Davis wore a wrapped splint on his right thumb but on Thursday his thumb was bare.
