A Kelvyn Park player ran onto the field Monday afternoon and physically assaulted a referee, forcing a Public League tournament match between Lane Tech and Kelvyn Park to be called midway through the second half.

Chicago police were called to the scene at Amundsen where the contest was held, but no arrests were made. The player left the scene before police arrived.

Kelvyn Park coach Jorge Ramirez confirmed the player -- who was not dressed for the game -- was a member of his team, but would not give the student's name.

"I thought I got rid of all the violent players we had a couple years ago," Ramirez said. "What happened wasn't right."

Moments after official Jose Luis Rivas stopped play to call a foul on Kelvyn Park, the offender ran on the field, swung at and shoved Rivas. A second Kelvyn Park player also shoved Rivas in the back before the second official, Juan Jaramillo, and Lane Tech coaches could get to the other side of the field to restore order.

The attacker was restrained by a Kelvyn Park assistant coach and carried off the field. Rivas and Jaramillo eventually called the game minutes later, awarding Lane Tech a 3-1 victory.

"I didn't see it coming," said Rivas, who was shaken after the attack. "I'm OK, but that wasnt right."

Public League officials did not return a call seeking comment Monday night.

"In my 10 years as a coach, I've never seen an athlete attack a ref in any sport," Lane Tech coach Andrew Ricks said. "Luckily, no one got hurt and everything was calmed down as quickly as possible. Something needs to be done, because an official should never, ever be attacked by a player or anyone for that matter."
