Lane gains revenge vs, Kelly

Updated: March 23, 2011 9:52AM

Matt Finnegan's pep talk paid off for Lane's wrestlers on Friday night.

Stung by last year's dual loss to Kelly, which went down to a tiebreaker

after the teams tied 28-28, Lane left no doubt this time and won 44-19 at

home.

"We lost to them twice (in recent years) and both losses were really

bitter," said Finnegan, a senior 130-pounder. "So I made a speech before

(the meet). I wanted everyone pumped up. ... I just wanted everyone to

wrestle hard and look for pins right away."

The Indians (14-2) did just that. Danny Carlson started the meet with a pin

in 3:29 at 103 pounds, beginning a run of seven straight victories for Lane.

Hiathem Hamdan (135) also had a pin and Finnegan had a technical fall during

the run. Johnny McCarthy (112), Tommy Angsten (119), Kris Adams (125) and

Joey Rialmo (140) all won decisions by four points or fewer to help stake

the Indians to a 29-0 lead.

Miguel Ornales (145) got Kelly (11-5) on the board with a 19-second pin and

Angel Hernandez (152) added a major decision. The Trojans also had a

decision from Dennis Flynn (189) and a fall from Pedro Martinez (285).

Ryan Pozniak (171) won a decision for Lane, while Chase Wilson (160) and Dan

Murray (215) received for forfeits.

The Indians were missing regulars Nick Jankowski and Max Schneider, who both

suffered shoulder injuries at last week's Lincoln Invitational. Schneider

won't be back till the De La Salle Regional, if indeed he's able to return

this season, though Jankowski is expected back next weekend.

Kelly was missing two starters and head coach Joe Joyce, who took a leave of

absence this season after being diagnosed with high blood pressure.

Lane also beat Brooks 81-0 and Kelly downed Brooks 65-18 in the double dual.
