Kaneland clicks in win over Yorkville

Todd Weimer knew he couldn’t have asked for more Tuesday in his Kaneland volleyball team’s 25-18, 25-19 victory over Yorkville.

“I felt like we really clicked tonight,” said the Knights’ coach, whose team climbed to 14-4 overall and 4-1 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East. “The girls are playing really well. We did some new things again tonight, but all 12 on the roster are playing well.”

Senior right side/outside hitter Katy Dudzinski led the way, recording a match-high nine kills for the visitors, who never trailed in the match.

Kaneland took advantage of 12 Yorkville errors in the opening game and was in control throughout despite committing four service errors.

There was little else for Weimer to complain about.

His team then opened a 10-0 lead in the second set, all on the serving of sophomore setter Jenny Lubic (11 assists). She had one ace in the run, Grace Fabrizius had a block and a dump kill and Lyndi Scholl another kill.

The other six points in the run?

They were all the result of Yorkville errors — hitting, passing, serve receive, you name it.

“We were never mentally in the match. We didn’t have our usual intensity,” said Yorkville coach Mike Dunn, whose team falls to 14-4 and 1-4. “But give Kaneland their props. They distributed the ball really well. Todd’s teams play very scrappy. And we just beat ourselves.”

It was especially frustrating because his team gave DeKalb, the only league team to beat the Knights, a test in the past week.

“We had them 18-18 in the second game and were even playing one girl short,” Dunn said. “We don’t have a Division I hitter (like Wichita State-bound Dudzinski or DeKalb’s Arizona-bound Courtney Bemis), so we’ve gotta be more scrappy.”

Junior outside hitter Jordann Dhuse did her best, recording eight kills, but the mistakes caught up with the Foxes, who also got five kills from Julia Craig and seven assists each from Rebecca Nauman and Nikki Fulco.

Kaneland, which also got 10 assists from Ashley Prost, had four kills and a block from Keri Groen and three kills each from Fabrizius and Scholl. Malory Groen added two kills and a block.

“That’s a well-balanced offense with all those kids getting 3-4 kills each,” Weimer said. “Both our setter have learned so much. They’re really doing a nice job.”
