Producing a 45-point second half, a much more aggressive Joliet West team rolled to a 59-48 SouthWest Suburban Blue win over host Sandburg on Monday.

“As the game wore on, our press took its toll and did what it was supposed to do,” said West coach Luke Yaklich, whose team forced six fourth-period turnovers.

Sandburg (8-8, 3-3) settled into a 2-3 zone and Joliet West (12-4, 5-1), which made only 6 of 22 shots in the first two periods, couldn’t get the Eagles out of it the entire first half.

Sandburg led 19-14 at halftime.

Joliet West star Marlon Johnson didn’t score until a three-point play in the opening minute of the second half. He didn’t play in the second period after getting his second foul in the final seconds of the first quarter.

The Tigers finally made a jump shot when Carl Terrell hit a three-point basket late in the third quarter. When he followed with another, Joliet West had its first lead of the game with 2:07 left in the third period.

Terrell added a steal and layup for eight points in 90 seconds. The Tigers led 34-31 after three quarters.

“I think the difference was in the third quarter when Carl hit that three and that stretched their defense a little bit,” Yaklich said.

Terrell’s scoring burst helped Joliet West go on a 32-9 run.

Johnson, who finished with 14 points and had all four of his blocked shots in the second half, scored inside twice early in the fourth period to keep the Tigers in control.

“This was a disappointing loss,” Sandburg coach Todd Allen said. “We were really not happy with the way we played, especially in the fourth quarter.”

Joe Kuligoski led Sandburg with 12 points. Nick Lehnerer added 11.

Brian Edwards (14 points) had another strong game off the bench for Joliet.
