The drizzle that fell throughout the girls soccer match Monday night between Marist and Joliet Catholic didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the East Suburban Catholic Conference rivals.

The intensity and physical contact on the FieldTurf at Joliet Memorial Stadium definitely picked up in the second half after Joliet Catholic’s Kyle Conti scored during a scramble in front to make it a 2-2 game with 25:25 left to play.

Both teams maintained an energetic pace the rest of the contest on the slick surface, but the game ended in a hard-earned deadlock after two scoreless overtimes.

“In the second half I told the girls we have to come out and try to win this game, as long as they play hard,’’ Joliet Catholic coach Oscar Valdez said. “To me it’s a great game, because Marist had beat Benet and Benet had beat us 4-0.’’

Midfielder Lauren Bernier of Marist (6-4-1), one of three team captains, opened the scoring five minutes into the game with a nice assist from Ailish Rispin in the right corner.

Joliet Catholic’s Rachel Zampa made it 1-1 on a penalty kick with 22:27 left in the first half after Chloe Krost was knocked down in the box.

Marist midfielder Jessica Socha, another team captain, hit the goalpost with a shot midway through the first half and Joliet Catholic goalkeeper Katie Ibarra made a strong save of a straight-on shot from Socha with five minutes left in the first half.

A goal by Claire Oosterbaan from a header assist by Danielle Inzinga gave Marist a 2-1 lead with 2:55 to play in the opening half.

In the second half, Marist goalkeeper Tori Jercich made a diving save to the post with 27 minutes remaining before Joliet Catholic tied the score two minutes later.

“Joliet Catholic has some strong players,’’ Marist coach Sean Maxwell said. “We didn’t play the game we wanted to play. We kind of fell into their game and it didn’t work for us.’’

Next for Joliet Catholic (5-5-2) is Carmel.
