Huntley gains revenge vs, Jacobs

Last year the Huntley girls basketball team lost to Jacobs three times, including a season-ending loss in regional play.
This time around, the Red Raiders took it to a rebuilding Golden Eagles team for a 65-28 win Tuesday night in Fox Valley Valley play.
Huntley senior Carly Goede opened the game with three consecutive three-pointers as the Raiders jumped to an 11-0 lead and never looked back. Goede finished with a career-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
"I just think our offense was going good and our shots were falling down," said Goede, a 5-foot-7 guard. "We were cutting really well and hit the open person. We just played well together as a team."
Huntley coach Steve Raethz couldn't have agreed more as 11 Raiders scored. Huntley (6-3, 2-0) also held Jacobs to just two first-quarter points.
"It was a really good sustained effort tonight," Raethz said. "I thought all of our kids did a really nice job of playing really hard and I thought it was a solid team effort on both ends of the floor."
After getting off just three shots in the first quarter, Jacobs (0-10, 0-2) started to find its offense, scoring 13 second-quarter points. Melanie Schwerdtmann, the Eagles' lone senior starter, tallied six of her team-high 13 points in the quarter. Still, Jacobs went into the break down 36-15.
"Sometimes we take a step forward and sometimes we take a step backwards," said Jacobs first-year coach Keith Chuipek. "Huntley is a good team, though. They are athletic and can shoot the ball well."
Sparked by another three-pointer from Goede, Huntley went on an 8-0 run to begin the second half, and headed into the final frame up 52-21. Senior Meagan Flynn finished with 10 points for Huntley, while Haley Ream added eight points. After missing the last two games with an ankle injury, senior starter Kadie Lowery tallied four points.
Huntley shot 28-of-62 (45 percent) from the field. Jacobs went 9-of-33 (27 percent) shooting.
The Raiders have three more games left at the Mundelein Holiday tournament before stepping back into conference play.
"The real key over the holiday break is playing the way we need to play heading into the conference season and really putting ourselves in the right position at both ends of the floor so we're in a nice flow," Raethz said. "We want to finish up strong at Mundelein and then use the 2-0 start in conference as a spring board heading into the new year."
