Crystal Lake South overcomes fumble woes in win

Updated: October 14, 2011 10:04PM

Crystal Lake South overcame 11 fumbles to knock off Jacobs 21-6 Friday in Crystal Lake.

“We had a new center and we worked with him all week,” said Crystal Lake South coach Chuck Ahsman.

“It was hard to simulate the speed of the game in practice. Fortunately, we didn’t lose any fumbles.”

Crystal Lake South’s defense had a hand in the Gators’ first score.

On the first play from scrimmage, Brendan Chrystal recovered a fumble at the Jacobs’ 37. 11 plays later, Zevin Clark crashed in from the three to make it 7-0.

Jacobs (6-2, 4-2 Fox Valley Valley) had a chance to get on the board just before the end of the half. The Golden Eagles moved to the Gators’ 4. But on fourth down, Jason Judson’s pass was incomplete.

Jacobs scored in the third quarter when Judson (20-for-39, 227 yards) connected with Jake Gierlak for a 36-yard touchdown. The conversion was missed making it 7-6.

From there it was all Crystal Lake South.

Resse Dziedzic busted off a 17-yard touchdown run to make it 14-6 with 11:10 left.

After a defensive stop, the Gators were all muscle. Running behind Blaine Tucker, Steve Forner, Drew VanArsdale, Pat Walsh and Jake Byron, Crystal Lake South went 82 yards on 15 rushing plays. Dziedzic capped the nearly seven-minute drive with a three-yard run.

“We wanted to push them off the ball,” Byron said. “We opened up some holes and got another score.”
