Joliet West went the extra mile for its season opener Friday night at Jacobs.
The long trip to Algonquin didn’t stop West from scoring first, but the Tigers were shut out the rest of the way in a 21-6 loss.
“We should have come out and played a little better,” West coach Jason Aubry said. “We couldn’t stop their run.”
Jacobs running back Caz Zyks had 18 carries for 215 yards and three touchdowns, on runs of 7, 2 and 65 yards.
“That second quarter killed us where they hit a couple of big plays,” Aubry said. “The third quarter that’s kind of when the bottom fell out.”
West capitalized on a fumble recovery on Jacobs’ possession midway through the second quarter and went ahead 6-0 after a seven-play, 46-yard drive ended with Kameron Hargrove’s 1-yard plunge. A 37-yard flea-flicker reception by Jorge Guzman helped set up the score.
Hargrove had 88 yards on 18 carries to lead West, which also used Korey Rogers, SaVaughn Alexander and Ramarr Jordan in its running attack.
“I think we can run the ball,’’ Aubry said. “That’s something that we haven’t been able to do in the past.”
Joliet West will play its first game on its new field Saturday against Plainfield South.
