Kyle Bernhard stole the show early on for Dundee-Crown on Friday night, but when all was said and done a whole cast of Chargers got in on the act as they rolled to a 67-46 Fox Valley Valley win over arch-rival Jacobs.
Bernhard was unstoppable in the first quarter as he drained five three pointers in Algonquin. He finished with a game-high 17 points. With the win, the Chargers improve to 14-7, 7-1, to stay within a game of division-leading Huntley.
“My teammates were setting some great screens for me,” said Bernhard. “I really have to give the credit to them. I had some wide-open looks. I’m sure any number of our guys could have stepped up and hit those shots just easily.”
Despite Bernhard’s three-point barrage, the Chargers only led 21-17 after the first quarter and were up just 34-29 at halftime. However, they were able to start pulling away in the second half by spreading the ball around to seven different scorers.
A 6-0 run to start the second half extended the Chargers lead to 40-29. Thomas McNally accounted for two of those baskets with a jumper and a driving layup. He scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half. By the end of the third quarter D-C had stretched the lead to 49-36. Brandon Rodriguez scored five of his 14 points in the quarter.
“I thought we did a much better job of getting into our offense in the second half,” said D-C coach Lance Huber. “One of the real strengths of our team is our passing and that was evident tonight. Especially in that second half, we moved ball real well and got it to the open man.”
The Chargers shot the ball at a 14-for-24 (58 percent) clip in the second half and continued to pull away in the fourth quarter. Bruce Dantzler came off the bench to score six points.
The Chargers defense held Jacobs to just five field goals in the second half.
“What can you say? They came out in the second half and took it to us,” said Jacobs coach Jim Hinkle. “They played great defense and stopped us right in our tracks.”
Nick Ledinsky had 17 points to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring. Alex Glover added 10 points.
