Knights hold off Guerin

Immaculate Conception scored 27 straight points to open up the second-half Saturday afternoon, and then survived a late rally by Guerin to claim a 41-34 Suburban Christian Gold victory in Elmhurst.

Kyle Siranovic started the scoring barrage for the Knights (3-1, 1-1) by returning the second-half kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown, and they took their first lead of the game following the PAT kick. IC never trailed again, as touchdown runs by Matt Mesnard, Jose Godinez and Sam Antes allowed the Knights to build a 34-19 lead.

Guerin's Tommy Kelly threw fourth quarter touchdown passes to John Dabe and Ryan Flynn that allowed the Gators to trim the margin to 41-34 with just over two minutes left in the game. Joe Iavarone recovered his second onside kick attempt for the Knights, which allowed them to run out the clock.

Antes, a sophomore, added a second TD run for IC and managed to gain 202 yards on just 12 carries, including a 62-yard fourth quarter scamper.

"He (Antes) did a very good job," said Knight coach Mike Alberts. "The plan was to alternate series for the running backs, we are trying to find some more depth and get some kids some more breaks during the course of the game. Sam did a great job, I do not think we missed a beat with him in there, really."
