Boys Basketball: Aurora Christian hot shooting downs Immaculate Conception

It was just one of those nights. Immaculate Conception was never in the game from the start till the end and Aurora Christian may have found a blossoming star.

The Eagles shot the lights out early and in doing so took away all the drama from its victory over IC with a 73-39 pounding of the Knights in a Suburban Christian Conference crossover game in Elmhurst on Tuesday.

“We’ve been down double digits three times this year and have come back all three times,” IC coach Darren Howard said. “Tonight, we just didn’t react to what they were doing. Give them credit.”

Aurora (13-4) collapsed into a 1-2-2 zone to take away the penetrating drives of IC guard John Cheng and the strategy worked well as the Knights (16-2) shot 1-for-12 from the field while Aurora jumped out to a 13-2 lead that was never threatened.

“We knew we could play with them but we never expected to come in here and blow them out,” Aurora coach Steve Hanson said. “(C.J.) Schutt is our best player and he got us going early on the offensive end.”

Schutt plays center but stepped out to open the game with a three pointer. The 6-6, senior then added a couple of more baskets to open the gap early.

That momentum was soon carried on by Aurora sixth man Cory Windle. The 6-5, junior showed a variety of skills as he scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the first half. Windle drained a three, drove to the hole and showed a good mid-range jumper in shooting 55 percent from the floor in the first half.

“Cory is slowly coming out of his shell,” Hanson said. “He is long. He can run, jump and shoot and he presents problems for other teams at the top.”

“I like coming off the bench because there is less pressure,” Windell said. “I think I will be more confident after this game. I won’t hesitate to shoot anymore.”

Schutt finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jake Hanson went 5-for-7 from behind the arc for 15 points.

Brian Harvey led IC with 13.
