Jacobs coach Bill Mitz was direct and to the point following Friday’s 48-19 road victory at Huntley.

“We did what we had to do, which was get the win without getting anyone injured. The offensive line played pretty well as did the defense,” he said. “It was pretty much a ho-hum game.”

The Golden Eagles technically had to come from behind in order to remain undefeated at 6-0 and improve their Fox Valley Valley mark to 3-0. Much to the delight of the Huntley homecoming crowd, the Red Raiders managed to stop Jacobs on a fourth-and-two conversion try in order to gain their initial possession at the Jacobs 48-yard line.

That’s when Kameron Sallee took a pitch from quarterback Jake Brock and pulled up to launch a 39-yard completion to John Walker. After a pair of Ethan Connor carries, Brock carried in from the 1 and Sallee’s PAT boot made it 7-0 with 7:16 left in the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles responded with an 11-play, 80-yard march capped by Caz Zyks’ 6-yard touchdown. That would be the first of his two touchdowns while Kyle Wright would rush for three others, quarterback Jason Judson would complete a 63-yard end zone strike to Jake Gerlak, and sophomore Hunter Williams would return an interception from three yards deep in the end zone.

Mitz admitted that getting refocused following last week’s emotional 28-20 triumph over Cary-Grove was part of the evening.

“We had to scold them after Wednesday’s practice to get their focus back,” Mitz said.

“It was a little difficult getting ready (after last week’s win). Being their homecoming, we knew they’d come out strong but we also started off flat. Once we got it together we got things done.”

With 129 yards on 18 carries, Zyks was just under the 138.6 he’d averaged through the first five games. Wright tacked on another 69 yards on 14 carries as Mitz’s “one-two punch” both credited the offensive line for their success.

“It’s really good running behind our line,” Zyks said. “They’re just very good at what they do.”

“We really have a big offense with a lot of different formations we can run out of behind those guys,” Wright added. “Plus, Caz always comes through in the clutch, which is a big weight off my shoulders. If I get two yards, I know Caz can get 18.”

Huntley’s Tyler Schwartz gave the home side a reason to roar just after Jacobs had taken a 41-7 lead in the third quarter when the Red Raider junior returned the kickoff 85 yards. A two-point PAT conversion failed leaving the tally at 41-13 with 6:57 remaining the third quarter.

The Red Raiders, who dipped to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the FVC Valley, managed to add to their tally with Joshua Fish bulling in from a yard out with eight seconds left.

“There were some opportunities to make some big plays, we just need to make more of them,” Huntley coach Matt Gehrig said.
