It wasn’t the type of game you would put into your time capsule, but it was effective enough to get a victory as Hubbard advanced to the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs with a 17-7 victory over Bremen Saturday night at Gately Stadium.

Javier Joosman hit a 27-yard field goal early in the first quarter which gave the Greyhounds a 3-0 lead which would stand until halftime. Bremen took its only lead of the game, 7-3, on an eight-yard run by Dontau Dodson with 7:18 remaining in the third quarter.

Hubbard snatched the lead back with 5:16 remaining in the third quarter on a six-yard run by Anthony Johnson. Larry Howard made his only carry of the game a good one, as he iced the game for the Greyhounds with 5:00 remaining in the fourth quarter on a 38-yard run for a touchdown.

Johnson was the leading rusher for Hubbard with 113 yards, 13 carries and one touchdown. Hubbard had to overcome 17 penalties for 110 yards.

Hubbard coach Elton Harris said his team has to cut down on the penalties.

“We are very fortunate to make this many mistakes against a quality team and come out with a victory, but we have good senior leadership, and a player like Quincy Skanes that helps us get back on track,” said Harris.

Bremen tried two onside kicks that were unsuccessful and two fake that were unsuccessful.

Bremen coach Dan Stell said he was proud of his team’s effort.

“It was a 100% effort. My kids did not stop playing until the final whistle. We did everything we could to win it. Our hats go off to Hubbard,” said Still.
