Skanes leads Hubbard past Vocational

The only thing that didn't go right for No. 23 Hubbard in their Prairie State Conference opener against Vocational was one missed extra point attempt. Other than that it was all Greyhounds as they rolled to a 46-6 victory Friday night at Gately.

Hubbard (4-0, 1-0) scored 46 unanswered points starting with a 65-yard touchdown reception to Larry Howard from quarterback Quincy Skanes.

Jonathan McClellan took one in from seven yards out with 9:18 remaining in the second quarter for a 14-0 lead. The defense put the next two touchdowns on the board, a 22-yard fumble recovery by Cortney Lewis and a 27-yard interception return by Larry Gourdine.

Skanes closed out the first half scoring on a 93-yard run.

The Greyhounds got things going in the second half when McClellan scored on a 95-yard run. Lewis ended the scoring attack putting Hubbard up 46-0 with a nine-yard run off tackle.

Vocational (2-2, 0-1) averted the shut out with eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter on a six-yard run by Jerry Burrnett.

Skanes finished the evening with four carries for 110 yards and was two of seven for 85 yards passing and one touchdown.

Middle linebacker Kyjuan Tate led the defense with 11 tackles and Lauren Padgett had two interceptions.

"This is one of my smallest teams, but they play hard and don't give up," said Hubbard coach Elton Harris. "If we can stay injury free there's no telling how far we can go."

"No rhythm and too many mistakes," said Vocational coach David Underwood. "We never got a chance to get anything going."
