Curie rolls past Hubbard

Hubbard and Curie are less than two miles apart, but while Hubbard has gotten all the notoriety, Curie was trying to gain some respect. They may have taken a giant step in that direction with a 32-6 upset victory over Hubbard in the second round of the Public League Playoffs, Friday night at Gately.

The Condors (6-5) took advantage of an injury that knocked Hubbard (9-2) starting quarterback Quincy Skanes out of the game early in the first quarter and five uncharacteristic turnovers by Hubbard.

Curie quarterback Reese Flemings got things going with a seven yard touchdown run that staked Curie to a 7-0 halftime lead.

Brandon Barker returned the second half kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, then scored on an 11-yard run with 6:50 remaining in the third quarter to give Curie a 19-0 lead.

Kevonta McIntyre scored back-to-back touchdowns on runs of 4 and 15 yards as Curie pushed the lead to 32-0 with 7:05 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Hubbard avoided a shutout with 4:25 remaining in the fourth quarter with a 16-yard run.

Curie coach Tyson Leblanc said this was the victory his team needed.

"Hopefully this is a turn the corner win for us. We feel that we should be mentioned in the same breath as the other top programs in the city," Leblanc said. "Hopefully this game will get our program the notoriety we deserve. The kids fought hard."

Hubbard coach Elton Harris said his team was just not in it.

"We have gotten to the point in our program that we put everything into winning in the state playoffs," Harris said. "We just didn't get up after that 28-20 loss in the state last week."
