Hubbard withstood a second-half rally by Prairie State foe Simeon before pulling out a 30-14 victory Monday in the Public League semifinals at Gately Stadium.
Up 10-0 at the half, the Greyhounds trailed 14-10 with 2:15 remaining in the third quarter when Will Taylor went off tackle for 76 yards to set up a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Quincy Scanes.
Albert Cruse Jr. recovered a blocked punt in the end zone with 9:12 remaining in the fourth quarter and Taylor grabbed a 19-yard touchdown pass from Scanes to close out the scoring.
Taylor rushed 12 times for 170 yards and two touchdowns, while Cruse recovered two fumbles and had seven tackles. Otniel Gross kicked a 22 yard field goal for Hubbard.
Deonte Minter scored on a one-yard run and Krystol Jackson scored on a nine-yard run for the Wolverines.
“We were definitely flat, but we got our focus back together and were able to pull off a victory against a tough opponent,” Hubbard coach Elton Harris said.
“I’m proud of our players," Simeon coach Jesse Chick said. "Against a team like Hubbard you have to take advantage of every opportunity you get and we had some great chances.”
Hubbard will meet Lane in the Public League championship Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hanson Stadium.
