Homewood-Flossmoor and Mount Carmel fell one game short of the Class 8A state championship last season. A year later, the teams are on separate paths.

On Friday, No. 13 Mount Carmel continued its push toward another successful season while the Vikings saw their hopes of another playoff run end. The visiting Caravan’s 49-0 victory handed Homewood-Flossmoor (3-5) its dreadful fifth loss of the season and eliminated it from the postseason.

‘‘I don’t think our guys expected to make the semifinals last year,’’ Vikings coach Kenny Smith said. ‘‘This year they thought it’d be easy to get back. It was important to play a game like this because if we ever want to win a state championship, we have to beat teams like Mount Carmel.’’

On the Vikings’ first play, Caravan linebacker Dimitrius Carr got things going for the defense as he exploded past the line and pulled down Homewood-Flossmoor quarterback Mark Williams for a 13-yard loss Mount Carmel (6-2) added seven more sacks.

‘‘It was unexpected,’’ said Carr, who added one more sack. ‘‘It set the tone for the game. Coach [Frank] Lenti’s been asking me to make plays.’’

Lenti’s pleas were answered.

‘‘I’ve been on his case for a while,’’ Lenti said. ‘‘He’s a Division I football player, and there are times he disappears.’’

Mount Carmel linebacker Chris Barcelona also had two sacks.

Mount Carmel quarterback Jordan Lynch threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. Milton Greer rushed for two scores and had 35 yards on four carries.
