Issleib, Hinsdale Central blank Glenbard West

Drea Issleib was one of three current Hinsdale Central players who participated in at least four games on the 2009 Class 3A state championship team.
But those days seem long ago as this year’s Devils hover around .500. Issleib scored her second goal of the season Thursday as Hinsdale Central beat Glenbard West 2-0 in Glen Ellyn.
Both teams are hoping for greater success in the postseason after winning a combined three West Suburban Silver games during the regular season. The Devils have one more conference game remaining at home against Downers North next Tuesday.
“Definitely two years ago, the state championship was memorable,” Issleib said. “Everyone knows we worked for it. We wanted to get it. But this team keeps getting better.”
Hinsdale Central (8-9-2, 2-3) won for only the second time in its last six games. Glenbard West (5-9-4, 1-5) attempted only two shots in the first half in the team’s final home game.
Both of the Devils’ goals were scored in the first half. Jaclyn Gutman scored off an assist from Jenn Jarmy with 34:22 remaining when Gutman was left open in front of the goal for a right-footed shot.
Issleib scored off a free kick with 16:02 to go. From 30 yards out, Issleib’s attempt went over the head and through the hands of goalkeeper Michelle Vonachen.
Hinsdale Central played without starting keeper Riley Glenn, who is sidelined with a rotator cuff injury. Senior Julia Gesior, who started the season as a defender, has replaced Glenn.
Gesior was tested only once when Lauren Davis’ breakaway was easily blocked by Gesior’s body early in the second half.
The Devils went 21-3-2 in 2009 when Issleib, Feinstein and Gutman each appeared in four games in reserve. Mary Cefaratti, Lauren Shroyer and Kate Shea were also on the postseason roster for Hinsdale Central.
Issleib’s only other goal this season game in the Devils’ 4-1 loss to St. Viator April 29 in the final round of the Naperville Invitational.
“This is my senior year. It’s been my best year,” Issleib said. “By far, especially because I’m a captain. In the postseason, we’ll have to step up.”
