Phelan leads Oak Park past Hornets
Oak Park junior quarterback John Phelan threw for three
touchdowns and ran for another in a 49-26 win over Hinsdale South in a West
Suburban Conference crossover on Friday night.
"They handled us up front offensively and defensively," Hinsdale South coach
Alex Bitto said after watching Oak Park put up 377 yards of total offense.
"We challenged our kids to be more physical this week," Oak Park coach Jim
Nudera said.
The Huskies (1-1) scored on the first possession of the game on a 26-yard
run by Tony Stapleton (22 carries, 131 yards) with less than three minutes
having ticked off the clock.
The lead went to 14-0 with 3:08 left in the first quarter on a
21-yard TD pass from Phelan (seven completions, 101 yards) to Tom Odell on a
fourth-and-five play.
Phelan tossed another 21-yard touchdown pass on a fourth-and-12 call to
Francis Bourke with 10:56 to play until halftime.
The Hornets (1-1) had a first and goal at the three-yard line late in the second
quarter and were denied any points by the Oak Park defense.
Phelan had another TD throw of 20 yards in the third quarter to Sawvanche
Wonsey to make it 28-0.
Ryan Johnson put Hinsdale South on the scoreboard after returning a fumble
13 yards for a touchdown.
The Huskies got the points right back on an 89-yard kickoff return by Jakari
Cammon to go up 35-7 late in the third quarter.
The Hornets scored three times in the fourth quarter on a 16-yard TD pass by
quarterback Jackson Panice, and on runs of 91 yards by DJ King and 75 yards
by Demario Gordon.
The two scores by the Huskies in the fourth quarter came on a one-yard run by
Phelan and a 41-yard effort by Wonsey.
