One big inning is enough for Oak Park
Updated: April 22, 2011 2:06PM
Eric Cybulski hit his first home run of the season in a wild and wacky sixth inning for Oak Park-River Forest Thursday.
Cybulski's two-run shot over the center-field fence was part of an eight-run inning for the Huskies, who defeated host Hinsdale South 10-4, to win their fifth consecutive game.
OPRF did not have a hit before the inning began. The Huskies were tied with the Hornets 2-2, but had all seven of their hits in the game during the sixth and sent 13 batters to the plate.
Cybulski, a senior second baseman, smacked his third career home run to score the third run in the inning. He homered off Andy Nkansah (1-1), who allowed six runs and three his in 5 1/3 innings.
"I kept my weight back more because I was flying open," Cybulski said. "I wanted to sit back and hit to the opposite field, but I made solid contact."
The Huskies (9-4) haven't lost since getting swept in a three game series against York, which ended April 6. OPRF hosts No. 8-ranked Lyons (10-1) at 10 a.m. Saturday in a West Suburban Silver doubleheader.
"I think as long as we hit, we'll do good. Everyone feeds off that," Cybulski said.
Mike Brennan singled to open the sixth after Nkansah gave up an earned run in the first and an unearned run in the fourth. Although no Oak Park batter had two hits in the inning, shortstop Ryan Kurtzer drove in two runs in separate plate appearances with a pair of sacrifice flies to center field. Kurtzer finished with a game-high three RBI.
MItch Duckhorn and P.J. Schuster had two hits each for Hinsdale South (8-4). The Hornets' next win would already equal last year's win total. Hinsdale South scored one run each in the first and second innings on a combined three hits.
But from the third inning to the sixth, Oak Park left-hander Max Guzzetta (1-0) allowed only one hit Duckhorn's single to center in his second at-bat. Guzzetta struck out five batters allowed five hits and walked two batters in the game.
Schuster drove in Hinsdale's first run in the first inning when he singled in Tyler Langosch, who walked and reached second on a wild pitch as the Hornets' second batter.
For the fourth consecutive time, Hinsdale South will meet Hinsdale Central for its annual all-District 86 rivalry at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at Benedictine University in Lisle.
"Obviously, we want a good turnout that night," Hornets coach Kraig Conyer said. "Last year it was rainy. It will be nice to get out there Thursday. It's the night before Good Friday, so I think everyone will enjoy it."
