Pat Webb’s OT goal keeps Lisle’s repeat hopes alive

It took two weather delays and most of one overtime, but Lisle kept alive its hopes of repeating as the Class 1A boys state soccer champions.
Pat Webb scored with 58 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give the Lions a 1-0 win against Hinckley-Big Rock in a Class 1A supersectional match that was delayed more than an hour because of weather on Tuesday night at Naperville Central.
“I can’t even remember what went on because it happened so fast,” said Webb, who is a senior co-captain. “The ball was just bouncing around and teammate Kyle Hendzel took a touch over to me and I just shot it — the result was awesome.”
Webb’s goal occurred minutes after a lengthy weather delay. The two sides went back and forth in the first half before Lisle began to really assert itself in the second half. The Lions (18-5) consistently applied pressure, but the Royals (14-9-3) withstood it thanks the strong play of defenders Cody Ekle, Christian Johnsen, Tom Sanders, Andrew Klambauer and goalie Forrest Grivetti.
The match eventually went to overtime and with 3:51 seconds remaining in the first 10-minute overtime session, the match was put into a weather delay at 7:45 p.m. The teams waited and attempted to restart the match at 8:47 p.m., but it was again delayed by weather. The officials and administrators gave it one last effort and restarted play at 9:11 p.m. and by 9:15 p.m. the match was decided.
“Nobody wanted to come back [Wednesday],” Lisle coach Kevin Perez said. “It was a great game and both teams showed great fight. We just got the ball in the goal there at the end.”
Grivetti was a big reason the match even made it to overtime as he withstood several shots from Lisle’s front line featuring Cole Collins, Alhaji Kamara, Hendzel and Webb.
“Lisle is a great team and they were relentless and they just kept coming at us,” said Grivetti, who missed a portion of the season because of a broken left leg. “We did the best we could. Our defense played great. There was nothing else they could have done than what they did. Everyone played their hearts out.”
Hinckley-Big Rock also had chances. The Royals’ best scoring opportunity came in the 34th minute when Zach Michels had a shot that squared up the post.
“We held Lisle at bay for a long time,” Royals coach Paul Taeuber said. “We had a lot of good looks, but we held the line all night — right until the end.”
Lisle advances to the Class 1A semifinals where it will play Warrensburg-Latham at 5 p.m. Friday at The Corn Crib in Normal.
Lisle defeated Peoria Christian in last year’s Class 1A state championship.
