With conference and regional meets around the corner, Marist’s cross country teams are building momentum.
The RedHawks swept the team titles Saturday at the Jimmy Daniels Invitational at Rich Central and had the girls individual champion in Maggie O’Loughlin.
Andrew’s Mike Keller won the boys race.
Marist’s girls dominated, having five of the top seven finishers to score 22 points and outdistance Lincoln-Way West (60).
O’Loughlin cruised to first place in 18 minutes, 14 seconds – 33 seconds ahead of Lincoln-Way West’s Natalie Waters.
“It was a hot day and I tried to stay in control,” O’Loughlin said. It’s our Homecoming weekend, so we used that for motivation. We’re really excited about our team.”
For Marist, Moira McDermott (19:34) was third, Anne Marie Leonard (19:38) fifth, Julie Yaeger (19:45) sixth and Kristen Barrett (19:56) seventh.
Toni Fiore (19:34) finished fourth and Kendall Grigoletti (20:14) ninth for Lincoln-Way West. Lemont’s Nicole Balinski (19:59) was eighth and Andrew’s Dezzy Arce (20:18) tenth.
Andrew (68) was third, followed by Lemont (117) and Hillcrest (161).
Keller (15:55) won the boys race by 13 seconds over Marist’s Kyle Hauser.
“I tried to get the first mile in five (minutes) flat and I did,” Keller said. “Then I just kept checking back to make sure my gap was at least 10 seconds.”
Hauser, Cody Haberkorn (3rd, 16:08) and Jake Tracy (8th, 16:44) paced Marist, which had 71 points to hold off Thornwood (77).
“I was looking forward to racing Keller again,” Hauser said. “He ran a really good race. Our team had a pretty fast week. We’re hoping to win conference and go into regionals strong.”
Rich South’s Luke (16:13) and Louis (16:20) Henderson were fourth and fifth, respectively, followed by Lincoln-Way West’s Mark Pedziwiatr (16:23) and Ryan Kennedy (16:39).
St. Rita’s Peter Schaible (16:47) placed ninth and Thornwood’s Reggie Brown (16:51) tenth.
