Football: Thornton takes Hillcrest for a ‘twin’ spin

Thornton really went to Towns in Friday night’s 49-6 opening-night victory over host Hillcrest.
The Wildcats went to two towns, in fact.
Twin Towns, to be totally accurate.
First it was quarterback Jason Towns, skirting around left end for a 33-yard touchdown.
Then it was his little brother (by one minute), running back Jamal Towns, running for the 2-point conversion and scores of 50, 26 and 60 yards.
Also in the mix, Jason Towns threw a 5-yard TD to Jamel Frazier.
By the time the Towns twins were done, it was a 35-0 proposition with just less than eight minutes left in the half.
Not bad for a couple of kids who as sophomores were backups on defense in the secondary.
“They showed great leadership, great character (during the summer),” Thornton coach Bill Mosel said. “We’ve been watching them since freshman year. So nothing that they did surprised me.”
Jamal Towns finished with 171 yards on 10 carries. After he left the game, D’Anthony Cross continued to carve up Hillcrest’s defense, rushing 16 times for 168 yards and TDs of 9 and 30 yards.
The reason went beyond speedy legs, told the twins.
“We’ve got a hard-working line,” Jason Towns said. “Jamar Gary, Nicholas Lloyd, Jeff Myles. We’ve got Ike Porter and Jerome Jenkins, too.”
“They’ve been working their butts off,” Jamal Towns added. “During all the summer they were waking up 6 o’clock in the morning practicing three-a-days.”
Thornton’s defense stepped up behind sacks by Brandon Harris, Dominic Bryant and Willard Cotton.
Hillcrest recorded just three first downs on the night, but did score with 3:51 left to play on a 5-yard TD run by Devonte Brewer.
