Lake Park’s grit under the rim paid off en route to a 51-40 win over Highland Park on Thursday in the seventh-place game of the holiday girls basketball tournament at Mundelein.

Lake Park center Alyssa Hernandez muscled her way to 12 points, including 10 in the first half to help the Lancers pull away in the early stages.

Highland Park sharpshooter Lena Munzer was beginning to find her rhythm in the second quarter as she drained consecutive three-pointers. But Lake Park forced the Giants out of their comfort zone by shadowing Munzer with an extra defender to weather the attack and further solidify their lead.

“I was very pleased with how our defense handled the job at hand today,” Lake Park head coach Andrea Miller said. “They were communicating really well and we did a great job of tracking their top scorer through our zone.”

Lake Park’s Alexis Hahn added 10 points for the Lancers and was a force in the paint alongside teammate Hernandez.

“I think Alyssa (Hernandez) and I play really well together between the high and low posts,” Hahn said. “Having our point guard (Amanda Prosperi) back to feed us some great passes helped a lot, too.”

Munzer finished with 23 points, but turnovers and missed opportunities were too much for the Giants to overcome.

“We are averaging around 20 turnovers a game and are making poor decisions,” Highland Park head coach Jolie Bechtel said. “Our shot selection was pretty poor today, but on defense we can’t be giving up 50-plus points.”
