Danny Dlugie hit a three-pointer with 2.3 seconds left in overtime to give Highland Park a 37-35 Central Suburban North victory Friday night in Deerfield.
The Giants (14-9, 5-4) Jake Norcia inbounded the ball with 4.8 seconds and found Dlugie on the wing.
“It was a double screen,” Dlugie. “I was open and I was ready to shoot. I’m happy I made one for the team.”
Dlugie had only one other basket in the game, finishing with five points on 2-for-6 shooting from the field. But he hit the shot that mattered most.
“Danny shot it with confidence,” Highland Park coach Paul Harris said.
After Highland Park grabbed an early 8-1 lead, the game was close throughout. The lead see-sawed with neither team holding more than a four-point lead after the first quarter. Wes Kinard (7 points) sank a three-pointer to give Highland Park a 30-26 lead with 2:47 left in regulation. Michael Alfieri hit a jumper with 1:54 remaining to bring Deerfield (9-13, 4-5) to within 30-28 in the Central Suburban North contest. After a Highland Park miss, Alex Sacks scored from the wing with 27 seconds left to knot the score at 30-30. Highland Park missed a desperation three-pointer at the regulation buzzer.
Deerfield took a 35-34 lead in overtime when Mack Watts sank a shot from the lane at the 49 second mark. Highland Park missed its next two attempts, but rebounded the ball each time to keep the final possession alive for Dlugie.
“It was a great basketball game. A great environment and a great rivalry,” Deerfield coach JJ Pearl said. “The kid (Dlugie) made a big shot. Give him a lot of credit.”
Norcia led Highland Park with 11 points, while Josh Sterns had 10. Ross Chukerman had four assists and three steals for the Giants. Sacks scored 12 for the Warriors, Watts had 11 and Alfieri chipped in with 10. Sacks and Watts each had six rebounds.
