Girls Basketball: Boone runs wild over Highland

VALPARAISO — Boone Grove coach Candy Wilson likes to play a run-and-gun style. But even this was more than she is used to.

It looked pretty natural out on the court at John F. Hinkey Gymnasium, though, as the Wolves knocked off Highland at home, 82-52 on Saturday night.

It’s the program’s third straight win over the Trojans and the team’s biggest over that three year span.

The Wolves (2-0) jumped out to a 13-0 lead and it looked like the Porter County school was going to coast the whole way.

“We knew what we were going to get into tonight,” said Wilson, who literally went over the Merrillville-Highland game film Saturday afternoon preparing for this contest. “The system they run is like what Olivet Nazarene runs where it’s just press, press, press, press like that so we knew it would be fast-paced.

“It’s one of those where they’re like playing street ball and the kids have to adjust themselves and they did a real nice job. It’s not necessarily a coached game, it’s the kids making decisions and I was pretty proud of them.”

Senior Brittany Shaffer, who recently signed her scholarship to play at Indiana University-South Bend next season, made quite a few good decisions herself knocking down 15 field goals and scoring 39 points in the win. She added four steals and four rebounds.

Brittany Slicker also had a productive game tallying 17 points — including four 3-pointers — and grabbing four rebounds, while Emily Bobrowski had 14 points and a team-high six assists.

“We had some girls do some nice passing,” Wilson said. “We’ve got a lot of talent on the team.”

Highland made it interesting in the second quarter. After trailing 21-10 in the first, the Trojans went on a 13-5 run following a rebound and basket by Kara Randall.

The Wolves bench came on and put out the fire, however, rolling off a 15-4 run to end the quarter. Boone Grove outscored Highland 22-4 in the third quarter to put it way out of reach.

Nikki Goodeve led the Trojans (0-2) with 15 points and five rebounds, while Michelle Giessler had 12 points and three rebounds.
