Elk Grove edges past Hersey

Big plays on special teams gave the host Grenadiers the edge over the visiting Huskies on senior night 16-7.

Hersey (4-4, 2-2) opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 66 yard passing touchdown from Quarterback Brad Zaucha to Wide Receiver Justin Jobski.

On the ensuing kickoff, Luc DiMaso accepted a reverse pitch from Kishan Patel and went 93 yards to tie the score at 7.

Elk Grove (7-1, 4-0) grabbed the lead in the second quarter with a safety when the defense dragged down the punter in the end zone after a botched snap.

The Grenadiers later blocked a field goal to maintain a 9-7 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter, Elk Grove kept a drive alive with a fake punt, and six plays later scored their only offensive touchdown of the game on a 5-yard reception by Vlad Oprescu.

Two critical conversions on third-and-long in the fourth quarter helped Elk Grove run out the clock and nail down the victory. Both times, Quarterback Adam O’Malley found Receiver Fernando Lorenzo for gains of 23 yards on 3rd and 21, and 17 yards on 3rd and 16.

Brad Zaucha passed for 246 yards in the loss.
