Through the heavy rain and the some 8,000 loud and raucous fans on Hersey’s home opener, the Barrington Broncos rushed their way to a 28-19 victory Friday night.

Led by Chase Murdock’s 198 rushing yards and three touchdowns, Barrington put up 319 total rushing yards to spoil Hersey’s home opener.

“I just have to thank the guys up front,” said Murdock. “I owe it to them.”

Murdock was a game-time decision as he missed practice this week due to a hamstring injury.

“We didn’t know exactly what was going to happen with Chase because if his injury, but he came up big and had a great night for us,” said Barrington coach Joe Sanchez.

Hersey got on the board first midway through the second quarter with an Andrew Collins 4-yard touchdown blast, capping off a 26-yard drive. Hersey would miss the extra point.

Trailing 6-0, Barrington constructed an impressive 13-play, 69-yard drive on the back of running backs Chase Murdock and Justin Dragosz. Murdock would cap off the drive with an 8-yard touchdown rumble to tie the game at 6.

Hersey would punt on their next drive, giving Barrington the ball at its own 35. But on the first play, Barrington running back Austin Schmidt fumbled the ball just as the rain began pounding down, which was recovered by Hersey’s Kevin Mengarelli.

Hersey, still trailing 7-6, was unable to capitalize on the turnover, as quarterback Brad Zaucha threw an interception to Liam Schonekas.

Barrington then deployed a healthy attack of runs and passing, and once again found the end zone, this time a quarterback sneak at the goal line by Mark Bennett, ending a 12-play 59-yard drive that chewed up 3:37 from the clock. Barrington would hold the 14-6 lead until halftime.

Barrington came firing out of the gate in the second half, putting together a 60-yard drive that chewed up over four minutes. Murdock would run in the touchdown, putting Barrington up 21-6.

The Huskies responded with a 76-yard touchdown drive of their own, but were unable again to convert the extra point, now trailing 21-12.

With 3:27 left Hersey drove 80 yards in 57 seconds, scoring on an 8-yard pass from Brad Zaucha to Brian Kiss. After converting the extra point, the Broncos lead was cut to 21-19.

Three plays later, Murdock once again found the end zone on a 49-yard touchdown run, putting Barrington up 28-19.

Hersey then drove all the way to Barrington’s red zone, but Zaucha’s pass was intercepted by Barrington’s Sam Handler to end the game.

“I have to tip my hat to Hersey for playing hard,” said Sanchez. “They made some plays that could’ve won them the game.”

Barrington is now 2-1 on the season and served Hersey its first loss of the year, who are also 2-1.
