Woodstock stuffs Hampshire

It was fitting. On senior night, it was a senior who made a heroic tackle late in the fourth quarter to give the Woodstock Blue Streaks their first win of the season (1-6, 1-4) Friday night at Larry Dale Field in a Fox Valley conference matchup over the visiting Hampshire Whip-Purs (1-6, 1-3).
The Blue Streaks sealed a 15-14 victory when cornerback Eric Debray thwarted quarterback Kyle Anderson’s run on a two-point conversion attempt less than a foot from the goal line with 3:04 left in the game.
Earlier in the fourth quarter, it was another Blue Streaks senior who made a huge impact in his last season when cornerback Donte Arnold picked off a pass by Anderson at 7:17 and sprinted it back 80 yards for a touchdown.
“They were running that play all game and I just jumped the pass really well and he threw it right into my arms,” Arnold said of his highlight reel-worthy interception.
Hampshire junior Chase Lundry rushed for 143 yards on 36 carries, at one point rushing the ball nine consecutive times.
“We figured we could beat them with our line,” said a dejected Lundry after the game.
Woodstock was not able to establish the run or pass for much of the game, accumulating only 131 total yards.
But it was big plays that carried the home team over the top. In the first half, on fourth and 7 from their own 23-yard line, junior punter Matthew Swedberg took the snap and made a split second decision to avoid a possible block and dashed to the Blue Streaks’ 49-yard line for a first down.
“The senior group tonight said, ‘We are going to win at home in our last game,’ ” said Woodstock head coach Steve Beard.
