Stanley's double leads Lakes

Updated: March 22, 2011 5:14PM

So what exactly has been the secret to Jonathan Stanley's

postseason scoring spree?

"Good food, I guess," the Lakes High School junior confessed. "Peanut butter

and jelly (sandwiches), and apples."

The usual pre-game sneak worked wonders once again as Stanley fired home two

more tallies to lead the Eagles past Hampshire 4-0 in the IHSA Class 2A

Lakes Sectional semifinals on Thursday.

Lakes advances to face either Fenton or Johnsburg (Thursday, 6:30 p.m.) in

the championship game back home at 11 a.m. Saturday.

"It's going to be very cool," said Stanley. "We were (in the finals) two

years ago and we're hoping to finish. Hopefully, we can go a little

farther."

Stanley, a standout center midfielder, got Lakes on the board against the

Whip-purs when he punched in a rebound tally to give the Eagles a 1-0

advantage at the half. He added his sixth goal in three playoff games with a

header off a corner kick by junior midfielder Scott Brugioni to make it a

2-0 contest early in the second half.

"The wind was very strong and that ball is moving in the air," said Stanley,

who has now scored 17 goals on the season. "I just got up like I can and

finished it in. It was a great cross by Scott."

Freshman forward Brian Werchek and senior defender Nathan McMahon scored the

final two goals to seal the win for the Eagles (10-9-5).

The Whip-purs (16-7-1) could never find a way to break through against

Lakes' senior-laden defensive backfield and junior keeper William Hill.

"There's heartbreak and disappointment," Hampshire coach John Gosling said.

"We knew coming into today that we could play with them and we did in the

first half. Unfortunately, we couldn't find the back of the net in the first

half and fell apart in the second half."
