Hammond -- Morton coach Jack Schlesinger pronounced himself pleased with the performance of his 6-lap relay team and then added something to his analysis.
"I think these guys want to have some fun," Schlesinger said. "This is their last chance to compete in high school and I think they want the fun to continue as long as it can."
The way the Governors relay team performed on Wednesday at the Bishop Noll Relays made the night a lot more fun. Morton, running in the second heat of the relay, ran a blistering 2:06.34 that turned out to be good enough for a first place finish after West Side's winning time in the third heat was more than a second slower.
"I am especially happy with them (Shevin Williams, Cory Phillips, Kayln Aaron, Quentrell Cole) because the competition was so stiff here," Schlesinger said. "And, I think our team will get nothing but better. These guys are good athletes and now they want to prove themselves one more time."
The host Warriors had a good night. Ian O'Boyle won the mile run and then ran the anchor leg of Noll's winning 10-lap relay team. His efforts won him the meet's Most Valuable Track Athlete award. Pat McCarthy took the 2-mile for the Warriors while teammate Colin Schreiber took the 60 high hurdles in a good duel with Alan Hall of Roosevelt.
"He really pushed me," Schreiber said. "I expect we'll see a lot of each other outdoors. I ran well but there's always room for improvement."
The MVP of the field events went to Stephen Rodgers of Wallace for his winning shot-put effort. He made an impression the night before when one of his tosses landed on top a batting cage on the edge of the area set aside for the event.
"I just exploded," Rodgers said of his cage launch. "It felt real good coming out of my hand. I did well here and the MVP is nice to win."
South Bend Washington won two events, taking home firsts in the 60-dash and the mile relay. Eric Valentine from T.F. South in Lansing, Ill., won the long jump.
"This was a good event," said Noll coach Chris Nicolini. "We had a lot of good competition and good performances."
