Four Rams scored in double figures as host Grayslake Central seized control of the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division by beating rival Grayslake North 64-55 on Friday.

The Rams (15-5 overall, 7-0 in the division) now had a two-game lead over North and Hampshire. North is 11-7 overall and 4-2 in the loop.

Tyler Smith had 18 points, Casey Boyle 15, SaVonte McWilliams 13 and Jordan Taylor 12 for the winners.

“It was a great team effort,” said Central coach Brian Moe. “Casey scored early against the zone for us, SaVonte kept us going with his good defense, Smith had a great game, especially in the second half, and Jordan, our senior guard, knocked down his free throws (6-for-6) at the end of the game.”

Central led 33-32 at halftime and 46-41 after three quarters. North pulled within 54-53 with 2:29 left on a three-pointer by Zack Krupp. But Central got consecutive buckets by Taylor and Smith to regain control.

For the game, Central was 17-of-22 from the free-throw line.

“We’ve been working on that,” said Moe, whose team shot poorly from 15 feet in a recent win over Johnsburg.

For North, Danny Mateling led in scoring with 15 points. Nick Carmody added 14 and A.J. Fish had 13.

“I thought our team played really well and we have nothing to hang our heads about,” said Knights coach Todd Grunloh. “The kids hung in, but Central hit their free throws down the stretch and that made the difference.”

Grunloh also loved the packed house, calling it a “tournament atmosphere.”

Ironically, Central will be the site of the Class 3A sectional tournament that’s part of March Madness. Both coaches hope their teams are back in this same gym playing in it.

On Tuesday, Grayslake North will play a non-league game at Marengo. Grayslake Central does not play next week.
