TENNIS -- Mitch Granger had a solid debut at the IHSA state tennis tournament.
The Grayslake Central sophomore opened with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Barrington's George Coll. After dropping his next match to Oak Park River-Forest's Michael Jacobs 6-2, 6-1, Granger rebounded with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in consolation play over Alex Haizel of Marist.
Granger's 2-2 tourney ended with a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Gordon Zhang of Naperville North.
As expected, the Pioneer Press Lake Shore area did quite well at this showcase event. Blake Bazarnik of Stevenson won the singles title, while Warren's Denis Bogatov took third. Lake Zurich's Michael Redlicki placed fourth.
In doubles action, Stevenson's Ross Putterman and David Packowicz took runner-up honors to help the Patriots take second in the team standings.
