Jared Helmich was 11 of 11 from the field in the first half, and scored 29 points in the game, and Ilya Kadushin added 21 as the home team held off Johnsburg 80-68 Wednesday at the Grant tournament.

Grant (7-4) used a 11-0 run around the halftime break to take a 45-32 lead, and the margin stayed between 7-14 the rest of the way.

“We’re working well as a team,” said Helmich. “During practice, we work on moving the ball around and getting guys good shots.

“That’s what we were able to do tonight. We were a little sloppy in the first half, but we picked it up in the second. Give Johnsburg credit: They hung with us the whole time.”

Grant was 30-of-46 from the field and 19-of-25 from the foul line.

“We scored 80 points, but we took a step back defensively,” said Grant coach Wayne Bosworth. “We let them transition up the side, gave up wide-open treys and wide-open layups.

“Our whole plan coming in was to take away the treys and open layups and force them into a halfcourt game.”

The coach praised the play of his team’s top scorers.

“Those are two big boys who we’re very lucky to have on our team,” Bosworth said. “Those are two guys I wouldn’t want to game-plan against.

“If you shut down one, the other is getting in there and getting the job done. They did a fantastic job tonight.”

Brandon Ridout led Johnsburg with 23 points off the bench.
