Football: Leo back in Catholic League playoffs

Updated: November 4, 2011 3:04PM

Leo is back in the Catholic League football playoffs after successfully appealing Gordon Tech’s use of freshmen in last week’s game.

The Rams beat Leo 14-8 on Saturday in a rematch of a Week 7 game won 39-19 by the Lions. But according to Hales athletic director Lawrence Nalls, Gordon Tech used several freshmen in a reserve role. Catholic League bylaws prohibit freshmen from playing in varsity games involving two conference schools, though Catholic League teams can play freshmen in IHSA playoff games against non-league opponents.

Leo’s appeal was upheld by Catholic League officials, resulting in a forfeit win for the Lions. Leo (5-5) will play at Hales (6-4) at 6 p.m. Saturday in the second round of the Catholic League playoffs.
