On a night of big plays, Gordon Tech’s offense proved more efficient as the Rams ran past Hales 45-35 Saturday night in Catholic League Green action at North Park Unversity.
“We’re just trying to find our niche,” Gordon Tech coach Bill Jeske said.
Fullback Lionel Lucas (19 carries, 98 yards) scored on touchdown runs of five, two and one yard in the first half, but Hales ended with a 23-20 lead at intermission.
The Spartans' Twame Tolliver picked up a fumble and went 45 yards for a score at the end of the first quarter. On fourth down with 2:15 left in the half, quarterback Christian Debonnett (5-of-15, 254 yards, four touchdowns) threw a pass down the left sideline. Receiver Rodney Jaynes grabbed a tipped ball and went in for a 59-yard touchdown.
With 1.6 seconds left in the half, Debonnett hit Derrick Wright for a 66-yard score making it 23-20 Hales.
Rams running back Noel Guckworth went around end for 28 yards for Gordon Tech (1-1, 1-1) to start the third quarter. Lucas had a three-yard score and quarterback Jake Schlenbecker rolled right and connected with Matt Olivera for a 30-yard touchdown to make it 38-23 after the third quarter.
Duckworth executed a halfback option with a Josh Willis for 49 yards to begin the fourth.
Hales’ Debonnett hooked up with Jaynes for 32 and 80 yard touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Hales is 0-2 overall, 0-1 in league play.
