Fresh off her team-leading performance at the Benet Invitational, York outside hitter Caroline Rose continued to baffle opponents.

The 5-foot-6 junior had a team-leading 11 kills Monday night as York played its first home match of the season to beat Glenbrook South 25-15, 16-25, 25-14. The Titans finished third in Class 4A last season behind returning outside hitter and Wisconsin-bound Ellen Chapman (13 kills, two aces).

Rose had five of her kills in the second set when GBS (0-1) jumped out to a 10-1 lead and cruised with seven aces in the set. Five of those aces were scored in the Titans' first 10 points. Afterward York coach Patty Iverson admitted to using the wrong lineup in the second set. The Dukes (7-0) made it close by scoring seven of the second set's final eight points.

Rose led the Dukes to the Benet Invitational championship Saturday with a win in the final over Hinsdale Central. York returns six of its top seven players from last season.

"When we came into the season we knew it could be a good season for us," Rose said. "We worked a lot in the summer."

York took control in the third set by scoring five consecutive points after leading 7-5. That run ended with back-to-back blocks by Sam Schrenker. The Dukes led 12-7 before starting a 10-2 run. The end of that run included two aces by Melissa Deatsch.

"We didn't lose much (from last year)," York coach Patty Iverson said. "We lost one senior and she didn't play. We're one year more mature."

The 6-4 Chapman was the only starter back from last year's state tournament to start Monday night. Senior Jessica Campobasso started at state last year, but came off the bench with three kills against York.

"We got the momentum scoring the first five points (in the second set)," GBS coach Katie Hoover said. "It certainly changed the game. The way we played in Game 2 showed what we are capable of."

The Dukes avenged last year's 18-25, 25-19, 25-20 season-opening loss at GBS when Chapman had 17 kills in the match.
