Glenbrook South pitched a second-half shutout, outscoring Evanston 17-0 after the break, to post a 26-7 win over the Wildkits in Friday’s CSL South opener in Evanston.

GBS (4-1, 1-0) led 9-7 at the half, scored a touchdown on its first possession of the third quarter and later cemented the contest when senior Billy Pappas caught a 13-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown that bounced off the hands of an Evanston defender.

Pappas’ touchdown came after GBS senior defensive lineman Michael Demos had picked up an Evanston fumble and carried it 30 yards to the Wildkits 9-yard line.

Demos was one of several stars on the GBS defense on this night.

“We have not had a better defensive effort in awhile,” GBS head coach Mike Noll said. “We did a good job running the game plan and our kids got after them. We had to tackle (Evanston running back Ray Bahr), that was the goal going in. If you don’t stop him, you don’t stop them. We also got such a good pass rush.”

Glenbrook South’s biggest play may have been its second of the third quarter, when senior receiver Zach Jones caught a short pass from senior quarterback Mac Zabriskie and turned it up field for a 66-yard gain. Senior running back Alex Leet carried it four yards on the next play to give the visitors a 16-7 lead.

Zabriskie added a 30-yard field goal in the third quarter to put Glenbrook South up 19-7.

Glenbrook South opened the game with a 2-0 lead when senior defensive lineman Steven Minkus sacked Evanston quarterback Max Block for a late first-quarter safety.

The Titans added to their lead with 2:35 remaining in the second quarter when senior tailback Kevin Schroeder took an inside handoff for a 21-yard touchdown.

Evanston (3-2, 0-1) got on the scoreboard with 1:28 left before the break when the senior Block hit senior receiver Victor Bordo for a 30-yard touchdown.

The Wildkits did create three turnovers in the contest — two interceptions and a fumble — but couldn’t turn them into points against a GBS defense at the top of its game.

“The ball just didn’t bounce our way and they were more physical than us on both sides of the ball,” Evanston head coach Mike Burzawa said. “We struggled on offense.

“We were still in the game (until the late fumble), but it was just a rough evening for us.”

Glenbrook South hosts New Trier Friday and Evanston welcomes Waukegan.
