Glenbrook South tops rival North again

Kevin Schroeder carried Glenbrook South to another win over neighborhood rival Glenbrook North.

The senior running back ran 29 times for 186 yards and two touchdowns, both in the second half, as the Titans earned a 28-14 victory over the Spartans in Northbrook.

Tied 14-all after two quarters, the Titans (2-1) took the lead for good on Schroeder’s 3-yard run on the team’s second series of the second half. He ran the ball six times on seven plays during the scoring drive.

Glenbrook South closed the door on the Spartans midway through the fourth quarter with a 14-play scoring possession that featured seven runs by Schroeder, who scooted in from 2 yards out to cap the nearly seven-minute series.

“I didn’t play much last year, so this is the first time I’ve run the ball this much,” the 5-foot-9, 175-pound Schroeder said. “The OL was doing their job. It’s not all about me.”

The win was Glenbrook South’s fifth in a row over Glenbrook North, but it was the first meeting since 2008.

“This is the first time my class has ever beaten them,” Schroeder said of the Spartans. “It was a big game of us.”

Neither team played close to perfect as the Titans totaled 11 penalties and had two turnovers. Meanwhile, the Spartans turned the ball over four times and were flagged nine times.

“I had no problem with our effort,” Glenbrook North coach Bob Pieper said. “We made too many mistakes, too many turnovers and penalties. We had to play a perfect game to beat them.”

Glenbrook North started the scoring on Curt Petty’s 62-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter. The teams then combined for three touchdowns in the final two minutes of the first half.

Spartans running back Grant Rushing was locked up by the Titans, ending up with 38 yards on 11 carries. Making matters worse, Petty, the starting quarterback, left the game in the third quarter with cramps.
